Buying a used phone as a baby monitor: what matters
Which used phone works as a camera for the nursery or a pet? Camera, battery, Android version, heat and whether a test exists.
For a camera phone you do not need to buy a flagship. A used mid-range phone from the last five to six years is usually enough. What matters is different from an everyday phone.
Camera and picture quality
A good main camera is more important than a fast processor. Ask for photos the phone took itself, ideally in low light. When the child sleeps in the dark, you see how low-noise the camera is. In VintageCam the display light or a night light helps, but a fast lens remains an advantage.
Battery and continuous operation
In use the phone hangs on the power adapter. A tired battery is still a risk: a swollen battery can become dangerous, and some phones run very hot in continuous operation. Ask about the battery condition and check that the case lies flat. Also read the article on round-the-clock use, battery and heat.
Software
The phone should know a recent Android version that your browser or the app supports. Older devices often still run but no longer get security updates. For a device that is only a camera that is acceptable, as long as it sits on your home network and does nothing else.
Test and badge
Look at the overview of tested phones. If your desired model is listed there with good results, you save yourself risks. Listings with the badge “VintageCam tested” show that the seller has checked the model themselves. That is not a quality seal for the condition of the individual device, but a good indication.
Handover
When you collect it, have the seller show you that the phone has been reset and signed out of accounts, and set it up briefly on the spot. More in Trading safely on the Marketplace.
