Dog home alone: how to recognise stress and separation anxiety

Does your dog bark, howl or wreck the flat when you are out? With camera and microphone you see what really happens and can practise in a targeted way.

When the neighbour says your dog barked for an hour in the morning, the first thought is often guilt, the second helplessness. Without observation you do not know whether he barked at the postman, howled briefly once or really suffered all morning. A camera closes exactly that gap, and it does not have to be an expensive pet camera.

Observe first, then act

Put an old phone with VintageCam in a raised spot from which it sees your dog's main place: basket, hallway or the spot by the door. Start the camera before you leave and leave the flat as you always do. Even the first trial run often shows surprises: some dogs lie down and sleep after ten minutes, others pace restlessly, pant or scratch at the door.

On your phone you get a message with a photo for loud sounds such as barking or howling. With live audio you listen in and notice whether it was a short bark or sustained calling. The recordings stay in the alert list for up to 30 days, so in the evening you can go through the day at your leisure.

How to recognise stress

Typical signs of stress or separation anxiety are constant barking or howling shortly after you leave, panting without heat, constant pacing at the door, drooling, destroying things near the door or puddles despite otherwise reliable house training. The pattern is what matters: a dog that protests in the first minutes and then sleeps usually has no serious problem. One that keeps calling for hours needs help.

What you can do

Bring professionals on board with the recordings. A dog trainer or behavioural vet can do much more with concrete videos and time periods than with the statement “he sort of barks a lot”. You can practise in small steps: short absences that the dog handles without stress, then slowly longer ones. The camera shows you whether you increased the duration too quickly.

With talk-back you can speak calmly to your dog in acute cases. With some animals the familiar voice soothes, with others it increases excitement because they hear you but do not see you. Try both carefully, ideally first during a short absence.

Consideration for neighbours

Anyone who finds out with the camera when and for how long the dog barks can also talk to neighbours more concretely and find solutions before it turns into trouble. That is a useful side effect, even if it is not the main purpose.

Limits

A camera replaces neither training nor care. If a dog regularly suffers from anxiety, the solution is no longer more observation but change: training, and care where necessary. The app shows you whether something is wrong. What helps against it you decide together with professionals.

How to adjust the sensitivity so that not every rustle sends a message is covered in the article Setting up alerts properly.
