Phone protection for couples and families: route, alarm and trust

How two phones look out for each other: sharing the route, arming remotely, alarm on theft. And why it only works with consent.

In many households a second phone sits on the sofa serving as a monitor. With VintageCam Ultimate these phones get another job: they report their route and secure themselves. That is practical, but it touches a sensitive subject. So first: how this is meant to work.

Voluntary, visible, endable

Phone protection is only switched on on the phone itself, never remotely. While it runs, Android permanently shows a notification. Only members of the household see the route, that is, accounts you have invited yourselves. And only someone sitting in front of the phone can end it; if it is armed, the app asks for the password again. This is the opposite of covert surveillance, and it should stay that way. Please only switch the feature on for phones that belong to you or whose owner has expressly agreed.

What you get out of it

You see on the map where each phone is and where it was last. That helps with small everyday questions: “Did you leave your phone in the car?” With the siren it can also be found if it has disappeared between the sofa cushions. It gets serious when a phone is really missing. Then you arm it from another device or in the browser: if it is lifted or taken away, the siren sounds and you both get a message with location and track.

Set what you want

Each trigger can be enabled individually: movement of the device, a change of place by GPS, pulling the charging cable. Each can have its own reaction if you like, with a siren or only as a silent message. Auto-arm is also a separate control, off by default. How it all fits together is covered in the article Auto-arm explained.

Practical before you start

Choose a clear name for each phone, such as “Marco's phone” and “Cecile's phone”. Activate the screen lock if you have not already, because without it unlocking is no proof that the owner is there. Allow the location “Always” so that the route keeps running with the app closed and after a restart, and switch off battery optimisation for the app (here is how). Up to five phones and alarm systems are possible per account.

Questions to ask yourselves beforehand

Should the route always run or only when the phone is armed? Who sees it, only the parents or also the grandparents in the household? For how long? The track is stored for at most 14 days and can be deleted at any time. Once these questions are settled, phone protection is a tool that helps in an emergency and otherwise stays out of the way.
